The Missing Girl by Shirley Jackson5/31/2023 When the lights come on, Theodora is nowhere near, leaving the already-fragile Eleanor to wonder tremulously aloud: "God! Whose hand was I holding?" In one famous scene, Eleanor and fellow investigator Theodora are in bed in the darkness, holding hands for comfort, as crashes and bangs intensify in the night. One intriguing aspect of Hill House is its ambiguity, especially whether the protagonist, Eleanor Vance, really experiences – or just imagines – the horrors that unfold within the mansion: disturbing messages written across hall walls, mysterious knocks on doors, distant, ghostly singing. Published in 1959 and filmed in 1963 as The Haunting, it is a masterpiece of edgy tension and creeping terror, telling the story of a paranormal investigator and his carefully picked guests, who stay in the titular property in a bid to prove the existence of the supernatural. Her best-known novel, The Haunting of Hill House, is the quintessential haunted-house story. It often seemed that her husband, the literary critic Stanley Edgar Hyman, was more respected than Jackson during her lifetime. Indeed, Jackson was expected to undertake the role of a 1950s housewife even when she was at her peak – ferrying her four children to and from school and doing the laundry, before finding a few moments here and there to bash away at her Royal.

To Tempt a Sheikh by Olivia Gates5/31/2023 It was kind of weird, I thought, but that's not a major focal point of the story anyway.Īt a little over five and a half hours, this is perfect for a longish drive or other kind of trip, maybe something to listen to while on vacation, etc. The one thing that I didn't much like was Harres' physical insta-reaction to Talia, even before he knows who she really is. I also liked the more exotic desert setting and there were enough steamy scenes without feeling excessive. It wasn't excruciating drama for the sake of excruciating drama they behaved like adults and were able to resolve the matter through reasonable and believable means, without sacrificing any of the plot or the feel of the story. I especially appreciated how the couple worked out the Major Conflict between them near the end. Harres & Talia's banter was fun, and the plot was decently crafted. Now a full-time author, she practices medicine mainly within her novels. But let's face it-that's what we're here for. USA TODAY Bestselling Author Olivia Gates started her professional life as a doctor. The man is, of course, an exquisite and preternaturally wealthy Adonis while the woman is usually some sort of wallflower-ish type who thoroughly blossoms into her full womanly potential while under his care/protection and, I need not add, his bedcovers. To Tempt a Sheik is your classic Harlequin Desire romance. |
